Writers Workshop Handbook of Tejano History

June 28, 2014

Here are a few moments from a historic, statewide gathering of scholars that will contribute Tejano and Mexican American entries to the HANDBOOK OF TEXAS ONLINE (http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online).

The initiative to increase the number of entries was organized by the HANDBOOK OF TEJANO HISTORY PROJECT. The effort is led by History professors Emilio Zamora (UT-Austin) and Andres Tijerina (Austin Community College).

More than twenty-five years have passed since the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) made an initial effort to increase the number of Handbook articles on Mexican Americans. Since then, researchers have made significant progress in Mexican American history and have helped to expand public and professional interest in the field. The Handbook of Tejano History Project intends to capitalize on this growth and interest by generating new entries and producing an authoritative, encyclopedic resource on Tejano history that will remain a standard source of information for decades.

The event was co-hosted by the Texas General Land Office, Texas State Historical Association and Handbook of Tejano History Project
