First African Landing Day is August 24, 2024, at Intervale Center in Burlington, Vermont. The Vermont Racial Justice Alliance established First African Landing Day on August 24, 2019 by inspiration of the 400 Year African American History Commission and the 1619 Project.

Vermont First African Landing Day was established to recognize and highlight the resilience and contributions of African-Americans since 1619; to acknowledge the impact that slavery and laws that enforced racial discrimination have on the United States and to educate the public about the arrival of Africans in the United States” The Governor has proclaimed on August 24, 2019 that the 4th Saturday of August “shall be henceforth recognized and commemorated as First African Landing Day in Vermont”


There will be ethnic food, music, dancing, speakers, exhibits, drumming and a youth “Hang-out” area at Intervale Center.

Featured guests will include Maximum Impact. They have appeared in hundreds venues and cities across the breadth of America Poeticizin for gangstas and governors, from neighborhoods to Hollywood in schools, churches, clubs, parks and prisons. Positively changing minds and touching the lives of people across all levels of society with their inspirational work and memorable character. Out of Sumter, SC, a multi-published, multi-recorded, spoken word artist, slavery abolitionist, and social justice activist and a book publisher, jewelry designer, multi-recorded and published spoken word artist and author of 11 Books, Max Parthes and Tribal Raine together are Maximum Impact!

Special guest will be Nkechi Taifa, Esq. Nkechi Taifa has been a principal player and catalyst in the reparations movement for over forty years. A founding member of the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America (N’COBRA), established in 1987, Taifa served as its first Legislative Commission Chair for years, and helped provide guidance and counsel to Congressman John Conyers in the initial drafting of the federal bill, H.R. 40. Attorney Taifa is one of the most knowledgeable and longest-serving experts in the US consistently engaged on the issue of reparations for Black people, decades prior to its current level of popularity. She is a strong collaborator with both Black-led and non-Black-led organizations and movements, and regularly serves as a trusted expert resource on the issue to the media, legislators, educators, philanthropy, non-profits, and business and celebrity influencers.

Cultural art, the Black Legacy Wall and the 1619 Traveling Exhibit will be highlighted at the Richard Kemp Center where there will also be a wellness drop-in spot.

All activities will be from 11:00 till 6:00 PM. There will be a shuttle between Intervale Center and the Richard Kemp Center all for the duration of the event.
